English Engravers Roman was designed by Robbie Smith for Smith Hands and was inspired by the many beautiful examples of English letter carving produced in the fruitful period between 1930 and 1980, when a beautiful, rich style of inscribed lettering was developing. With letter carvers such as Eric Gill[apprentice to calligrapher, designer Edward Johnston] and David Kindersley [apprentice to Gill] driving this craft culture and enriching the architecture and memorials of England.
English Engravers Roman features some of the spirit of this English style, with a timeless refinement and a wide character set that features extra ligatures to enhance letter spacing, along with a set of oldstyle numerals in addition to the traditional figures.
